The Bachelor of Science, Housing, Building and Planning (Honours) (Quantity Surveying) Programme (“the QS Programme”) was first introduced by the School of Housing, Building and Planning, University Science Malaysia in the academic session 1999/2000. The QS Programme was established in response to the government’s call to produce trained, skilled and knowledgeable quantity surveyors, and emphasizes training to improve the technical, management and development fields that provide graduates with the opportunity to absorb a wider range of knowledge, the ability to adapt to various conditions and to solve problems creatively and innovatively.
This programme is dynamic and comprehensive in nature due to the exposure and appreciation of other related fields like Project Management, Architecture, Engineering, Planning and Interior Design. This knowledge enables real increases in skills and abilities, produce graduates equipped with broader knowledge, yielding more confidence and higher awareness of other fields. A focus on outcomes-based education with problem-based learning emphasized during specific situations allows the amalgamation of the variety of expertise at the School of Housing, Building and Planning and harnesses the multi-disciplinary culture. The effect ensures graduates who are critical and innovative thinkers whilst ensuring the need for effective communication. Apart from that, this programme emphasises on a research-driven culture, generic skills and a proclivity towards leadership, in order to generate graduates who will lead by example. The aim is to equip graduates with knowledge that will enable them to pursue professionalism in this discipline and towards becoming a registered quantity surveyor. It also opens avenues for the graduates to work abroad by ensuring that the programme offers an education which are recognised globally. In line with this commitment, the programme has full local recognition status obtained from the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) and accreditation with the prestigious Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Pacific Association of Chartered Surveyors (PAQS), allowing for global recognition and unlimited opportunities. In the past as well as currently, the programme has accepted non-Malaysian students from Mauritius, China and Kazakhstan. Conversely local students have also ventured abroad, primarily to Singapore, in search of employment. |
